Dental pain is an emergency

Dental Pain

Of all the aspects of dentistry, pain is never far from people’s thoughts.

I’ve heard it said a few times that ‘to suffer is to be human’, but for all the world I can’t think of anything more inhuman than dental pain. On the other hand, it is just when people are in that pain that we can help them the most.

Believe it or not, as a dental industry we still get a bad press about pain, and I think that’s a bit of a hang over from an age long ago. But, these days, it would be fair to say that Dentist and Patient alike just want it to go away as quickly as possible.

These days, in case of doubt, pain control comes first.

We try to do our bit.

As well as prioritising pain control, whether people are members or patients of Hartley Dental or not, anyone in pain can call and book to see us.

We’ll do our very best to switch things around and attend to their pain.

We are not yet a 24 hour 7 day a week operation. I guess as the practice grows then it might be a possibility in the future, but at this stage, we are offering a first come first served appointment system in and around our normal working hours.

It’s just the human thing to do.

We’ve made it a fixed price, whatever needs doing, to make it easier for people to know what to expect. Emergency Dental Service (Plymouth)

White fillings before and after photos

In the before and after pictures of white fillings below, we took out the patient’s old fillings and replaced them with multi-layered, natural-coloured fillings.

Shades of Pale

Of course, there are many different shades of tooth colour, and the skill is to match the material precisely enough so that other people can’t tell the difference!

So much better if the owner can’t tell the difference either, and that’s happened to our patients a few times. It’s great when that happens.

Front Teeth Gap

In the case study pictures below, there was also a gap between the patient’s front teeth and so we added a little of the tooth-coloured material to the teeth on either side of the gap.  Straightening the teeth is another benefit of this incredibly versatile cosmetic dental material (a subject of a future post)

As you can see, the two techniques blended together have enhanced this patient’s smile so much that she now looks like a different person.

Inside / outside teeth whitening

- a superb way of treating extremely discoloured teeth

When treating extreme cases of tooth discolouration we can transform someone’s smile by employing a combination of tooth whitening techniques.  In the example below, a patient came to us having been offered treatments elsewhere that would have cost him in the region of £3,000.   He’d been recommended everything from a set of crowns, a bridge or an implant, or even having all of his teeth removed.

We treated some of the teeth from the outside using bleaching gel. But the seriously dark teeth were also treated from the inside by removing the old, dark filling from the back of the tooth.

The entire treatment cost the patient £800, and as you can see from the photographs, the results were superb.

How to change somebodys life in a day

For people who have spent years smiling with their mouths closed or devising other cunning ways of hiding their teeth, the combined effect of teeth whitening treatments and the replacement of their old fillings can be truly life-changing.

And the great thing is, a new, radically improved, gorgeous smile doesn’t have to take month’s to achieve.  The patient whose before and after photographs are shown below, underwent all the treatments required to transform their smile in a single visit to our surgery.

The first step was to remove all the patient’s old fillings.  Next, while the new fillings were being made, we whitened their teeth with an intense bleaching gel.  And finally, we put the new fillings in and hey presto – a total transformation and a great new smile!

Teeth Whitening Before and After Pictures

One of the biggest pleasures in being a dentist (and yes, there are a few!) is being able to get someone’s teeth into really good shape.  Restoring somebody’s teeth to good health usually dramatically improves their appearance as well.

Having a smile you feel happy about can really enhance your life.  The patient whose teeth are shown below, had suffered a major loss in self confidence.  In fact he was so under-confident, it was actually his mother who made the appointment for him to come and see us.

Rather than cutting into the patient’s teeth and fitting expensive, porcelain veneers, we used two simple techniques to transform his smile.  The results you can see here were achieved by whitening teeth with bleaching gel and replacing his old fillings with our new ones – two simple techniques, but as you can see, they bring about magical results.

The new Garden Room

Our builders have performed a miracle! The new garden room is open and furnished and very lovely it is too! A month early and inside our budget! Now to sort out the fridge and the coffee………..

From Charles: I have to say a big thank you to all the people involved in helping us complete the project. Our builders Conqueror and all their contractors have been fantastic – a bit of dust but we have coped and kept going and they have achieved a fantastic end result for Hartley. Brian Walker our designer and Mike Dacre of RBS have been very helpful over the course of the build. Most of all I have to thank my great team for managing everything through the process and keeping smiling. A special mention must go to my business manager, Sue Casey, who managed to bring my vision to reality. Well done everyone.

No Smoking Day

Wednesday 10th March 2010 is National No Smoking Day.

At Hartley Dental we will have information during this week for anyone who is interested in quitting smoking. You can also access the Plymouth Stop Smoking Service directly by calling 0845 155 8080 or on the website www.smokingadviceservice.com. They will gladly give you information on courses that they hold or access through your GP.

Smoking is a risk factor for gum disease and because of this we always advise that quitting smoking is essential in achieving a healthy mouth.
